Preface It s a pleasure to brng you these summares of research conducted over the past year at the U.S. Dary Forage Research Center (USDFRC). The Center's mission is to build a knowledge and technology base for the dary ndustry to fully explot the use of forages n the producton of mlk. The Center was establshed n 1980 on the Unversty of Wsconsn-Madson campus n Madson, WI, but s a federal unt of the Agrcultural Research Servce, U.S. Department of Agrculture (USDA). We employ agrcultural engneers, plant and sol scentsts, mcrobologsts, rumnant nutrtonsts, and chemsts, who all work together to increase the efficiency of forage production and utilization by dairy farmers. At present, we have 22 scientists: 17 at Madison, two at Marshfield, two cluster scientists at the Unversty of Mnnesota n St. Paul, MN, and one cluster scentst at Cornell Unversty n Ithaca, NY. Many of these scentsts hold faculty appontments n unversty departments and provde supervson for approxmately sx to eght graduate students and four postdoctoral fellows. We functon n close cooperaton wth the agrcultural experment statons of several states. The Center's 2,000-acre research farm s located n Prare du Sac, WI and has facltes for housng and feeding 320 milking cows and 350 replacement heifers and dry cows. On September 29, 2004, the USDA receved custody of 1,943 acres of Badger Army Ammunton Plant (BAAP) land that had been prevously leased by the USDFRC research farm. Ths acreage s dvded nto cropland, pasture, small-plot research, woodland, buffer strips, …

Development and Testing of Cool-Season Grass Species, Varieties and Hybrids for Biomass Feedstock Production in Western North America
Breeding of native cool-season grasses has the potential to improve forage production and expand the range of bioenergy feedstocks throughout western North America. Basin wildrye (Leymus cinereus) and creeping wildrye (Leymus triticoides) rank among the tallest and most rhizomatous grasses of this region, respectively. The objectives of this study were to develop interspecific creeping wildrye ...
متن کاملOpportunities for Napier Grass (Pennisetum purpureum) Improvement Using Molecular Genetics
Napier grass (Pennisetum purpureum Schumach.) is a fast-growing perennial grass native to Sub-Saharan Africa that is widely grown across the tropical and subtropical regions of the world. It is a multipurpose forage crop, primarily used to feed cattle in cut and carry feeding systems. Characterization and diversity studies on a small collection of Napier grasses have identified a moderate level...

DEDICATED ENERGY CROPS AND MODELS Lignocellulosic biomass derived from energy crops and agricultural residues is a promising renewable source for the production of transportation fuels and bio-based materials. Plants exhibiting C4 photosynthesis are amongst the most promising dedicated energy crops as they possess tremendous intrinsic efficiency in converting solar energy to biomass. Van der We...
متن کاملGenetic variation and comparison of orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata L.) cultivars and wild accessions as revealed by SSR markers.
Orchardgrass is a highly variable, perennial forage grass that is cultivated throughout temperate and subtropical regions of the world. Despite its economic importance, the genetic relationship and distance among and within cultivars are largely unknown but would be of great interest for breeding programs. We investigated the molecular variation and structure of cultivar populations, comp...
متن کاملREVIEW: PART OF A HIGHLIGHT ON BREEDING STRATEGIES FOR FORAGE AND GRASS IMPROVEMENT Metabolomics of forage plants: a review
†Background Forage plant breeding is under increasing pressure to deliver new cultivars with improved yield, quality and persistence to the pastoral industry. New innovations in DNA sequencing technologies mean that quantitative trait loci analysis and marker-assisted selection approaches are becoming faster and cheaper, and are increasingly used in the breeding process with the aim to speed it...
